A nonprofit group called the Green River Community Food Warehouse is beginning a fundraising campaign to build a 20,000 square-foot climate-controlled warehouse in Owensboro for area food pantries and soup kitchens.
The organization plans to raise most of the funds itself, and is partnering with Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks.
Steve Innes, a member of the group planning the warehouse, said the goal is to provide food that needs to be refrigerated or frozen to soup kitchens and food pantries throughout the region.

Members of the nonprofit group made a presentation about their plans Tuesday night to the Owensboro City Commission.

“We would appreciate any help they can give us,” Innes said Friday. “I want them to be advocates for us and help us make contacts.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 12.8% of Americans were considered food insecure in 2022, which means they did not have “dependable access to enough food for active, healthy living.”

Feeding America estimates there are 13,450 people considered food insecure in Daviess County.
